Today is World Post Day.

It is the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern.It was declared World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan 1969.

This might be an excellent day to send someone a letter.

It is Leif Erickson Day today. The day we forget the Columbus we celebrated yesterday and remember the guys who got here first.

It is Curious Events Day, and Moldy Cheese Day.

Yesterday was the 141st anniversary of the Great Chicago fire. Today is Fire Prevention Day.

In South Korea they are celebrating Korean Alphabet Day. In Peru it is National Dignity Day. Spain celebrates "Day of Community" while the Dominican Republic celebrates Columbus Day. It's Independence Day in Uganda and Independence of Guayaquil Day in Ecuador. Meanwhile, in Azerbaijan it is Army and Navy Day.


On this date in 1635, Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, was banished from Massachusetts because he had spoken out against punishments for religious offenses and giving away land that belonged to the Indians. Williams founded Providence, Rhode Island as a place for people to seek religious freedom.

In 1855, Isaac Singer patented the sewing machine motor on this date. Also in 1855 Joshua C. Stoddard received a patent for his calliope.

October 9th is the birthday of both John Lennon and his son Sean.
