October the 13th is a relatively boring day. It is International Skeptics Day, or so they say. But what can you do with that? It is Yorkshire Pudding Day, but who eats that?

It's also the day that the "Happy Birthday To You" song was copywritten. But what if you don't know anyone to sing it to?

Well, You can sing it to someone who will be born on October 13th 2324. Yes, Beverly Crusher, M.D. (born Beverly Cheryl Howard),  is a fictional character on the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Happy Birthday then, Beverly...if you ever will exist....which I doubt.

Today is International Moment of Frustration Scream Day, sponsored by Tom & Ruth Roy of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, who encourage everyone to go outdoors at noon (Greenwich time) and scream for 30 seconds.

Today is Child Rambunctiousness Appreciation Day, a time to admire the energy of children.

Today is the Day of Six Billion, when the world population reached six billion people on this date in 1999.

It is also St. Edwin's day.  He is the patron of tramps, hobos, the homeless, and parents of large families.

It seems to me, these things cannot be coincidental.

I am sure there are parents of large families of rambunctious children who, while appreciating their children's energy level and value as part of the population, feel they are being eaten out of house and home, and feel the tiniest bit compelled to stand on the lawn and scream for 30 seconds. Well, Folks, today you can.

It's also Old Farmers Day, World Egg Day, St Edward the Confessor Feast Day, and Free Thought Day.

On this date, the Cotton Candy Machine was patteneted, waterproof fabric was invented, the Pledge of Allegiance was first recited in public schools in 1892, in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the Columbus landing, and inventor Elmer Sperry was born. He held patents on more than 400 inventions. The most important being the Sperry Automatic Pilot.

In 1914, on this date Margaret E. Knight died. An American inventor, she invented an improved paper bag machine to make bags with flat bottoms. If your large family of kids is "brown bagging it" today, they can thank her.

And, on this date in 1216, King John of England loses his royal treasure in The Wash, probably near Fosdyke, perhaps near Sutton Bridge
I've lost lots of things in the wash, but goodness! Let that be a lesson to us all to remember to check the pockets of all graments before laundering!

This also is National Popcorn Poppin' Month. And, the Popcorn Board beats the Texas Peanut Board in cool websites....this one has sound effects! http://www.popcorn.org/

Today is National Sausage Pizza Day.
Aah, that answers the "what to make for dinner" question. :)

1869 - Thomas Edison filed for a patent on his first invention. The electric machine was used for counting votes for the U.S. Congress, however the Congress did not buy it.
Edison learned a hard lesson that day...Congressmen are not all that interested in accurate counts....unless their party has lost. He invented the phonograph and fared much better. Congressmen will pay money to hear themselves speaking.

Speaking of elections...10-11-1932: In New York, the first telecast of a political campaign was aired.
...And it just kept going downhill from there. :)

1983 - The last hand-cranked telephones in the U.S. went out of service. The 440 telephone customers of Bryant Pond, ME, were switched to direct-dial service.

On this date in 1759, Parson Mason Weems was born.
He was the one who fabricated uh, "recorded for history" the story about George Washington cutting down his father's cherry tree.
You know,...that one that is supposed to encourage school children to never tell a lie.

In 1727 the Coronation Anthem No. 4, by Handel, was first performed in Westminster Abbey

In 1811 The Juliana, the first steam-powered ferryboat, was put into operation by the inventor John Stevens. The ferry went between New York City, NY, and Hoboken, NJ
I think we will celebrate by making our own ferryboat...Like this one.

And, just a reminder: October is "Go Nuts Over Texas Peanuts" month.
You can find out more on the web page of the Texas Peanut Board, the ones who are "Feeding Texans One Nut At A Time" according to their motto.

Today: World Day For Natural Disaster Reduction....Gotta say that one sounds a tad bit pointless.... I mean, can we really reduce natural disasters? But it seems this is actually a day to get national leaders to focus on building communities which are less vulnerable to the effects of natural disasters.

It is Double Tenth Day ( 10-10 ) or, Bonza Bottler Day. As interesting as that might be, I think tomorrow's date is more impressive (10-11-12).

World Mental Health Day is today. It also happens to be Bring Your Teddy Bear To Work Day. If that doesn't improve your mental health, I don't know what will!

Of course, there has to be something yummy on the menu everyday...today is National Angel Food Cake Day.

Today is Tuxedo Day...the day when the Monkey Suit was first worn in the U.S. It was the year 1886. So, go ahead and take your Teddy Bear to work in style. If you don't happen to have a tuxedo-clad-bear, you can get one here. It's on sale.

In 1892, Earle Dickson was born. He invented Band-Aids for his wife, who had frequent kitchen accidents, cutting or burning herself. He worked as a buyer for Johnson & Johnson, who soon began manufacturing Band-Aids.

Soap operas were discovered on this date in 1932. The shows, "Betty and Bob" and "Judy and Jane" were first aired on the radio on this date. They sure came up with great names back then!

And don't forget, October is Dryer Vent Safety Month....check that out now, and save a life.

This might be an excellent day to send someone a letter.

It is Leif Erickson Day today. The day we forget the Columbus we celebrated yesterday and remember the guys who got here first.

It is Curious Events Day, and Moldy Cheese Day.

Yesterday was the 141st anniversary of the Great Chicago fire. Today is Fire Prevention Day.

In South Korea they are celebrating Korean Alphabet Day. In Peru it is National Dignity Day. Spain celebrates "Day of Community" while the Dominican Republic celebrates Columbus Day. It's Independence Day in Uganda and Independence of Guayaquil Day in Ecuador. Meanwhile, in Azerbaijan it is Army and Navy Day.

On this date in 1635, Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, was banished from Massachusetts because he had spoken out against punishments for religious offenses and giving away land that belonged to the Indians. Williams founded Providence, Rhode Island as a place for people to seek religious freedom.

In 1855, Isaac Singer patented the sewing machine motor on this date. Also in 1855 Joshua C. Stoddard received a patent for his calliope.

October 9th is the birthday of both John Lennon and his son Sean.
