Today is Evaluate Your Life Day.

On this date...
In 1998 - Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson got his boxing license back after he had lost it for biting Evander Holyfield's ear during a fight.

In 2003 - London magician, David Blaine, emerged from a clear plastic box that had been suspended by a crane over the banks of the Thames River. He survived only on water for 44 days. Blaine had entered the box on September 5.

If those two quotes don't make you evaluate your life, I don't know what will. I mean, when you look at those two, you realize that human beings are some pretty strange folks capable of things that defy the imagination.
What will you do with your life?
What will you be remembered for?
And what good is being remembered, when the folks remembering you are too busy wondering what they will be remembered for?

The answer is that life is not the real thing. It is simply a charade in which we think we can do something worth being remembered. It is a list of mostly forgotten facts, stumbled across occasionally when we are looking for an interesting read. There is so much more, but it's not going to be found here. It's not about life, or even "life after death", it's about the glory of God. It's about knowing the unfathomable One who is the reason for our existance. It's about knowing Him and petitioning His Son for the great gift of forgiveness we could never earn so that we might be worthy of the honor of sitting at His feet and worshipping Him for eternity. There really is nothing on the shedule for today, or a thousand tomorrows for that matter, that is important enough to even be mentioned alongside that. Life, death, hunger, grief...they all pale in comparison when we begin to see Him as He is and worship Him as the God He is.

Today is "No Beard Day" and "Chocolate Cupcake Day". If you wish to celebrate both holidays today, I would recommend wiping that chocolate frosting off your chin.

It is "Person's Day" in Canada. The day they celebrate the desicion made by the Canadian Senate that women are persons. Kind of them, really.

Today in 1961, a peice of art called, "Le Bateau" by Henri Matiss was put on display in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. It took them 46 days to realize they had hung it upside down.

In their defence, it's kind of hard to tell:

Today is Hagfish day. A day to realize that beauty isn't everything....I mean....these fish have a day just to celebrate their ugliness. Look in the mirror and be grateful.

It is also Mulligan Day. A day when you can get a "do-over". If that glance in the mirror scared you as much as mine scared me, you may need to claim a "mulligan" for your make-up job.

Wear Something Gaudy Day is also today, so if the second round of make-up didn't help, and those hagfish look a bit too familiar, just put on something gaudy, and hope it keeps everyone's attention.

Back to that hagfish thing for a moment....There is a website here with directions on how to make a "hagfish bouquet" with your children so that they can, "Share the beauty of ugly with friends!" and encourages them to think "who they might give a bouquet to...for Hagfish Day." So, are they encouraging children to tell people they like their ugliness? Because I don't see that as a huge self-esteem booster personally. But maybe I'm just behind the times.

Anyway, today is also the birthday of Jean Aurthur, born on this day in 1900. She was an American actress well known for her appearance in the film "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, which just happens to have premiered on this date in 1939. I believe that makes for a very good reason to pull out that film for Eli and I to watch tonight.

Today is...Charlotte's Web Birthday (1952), I Love Lucy Day (1951), Mushroom Day, Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day, National Grouch Day, and National Poetry Day.  
On this day in 1860 Eleven year old Grace Bedell wrote a letter to presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln telling him that he would look better if he would grow a beard. Obviously, the advice worked, he won the election, and kept the beard.
I am sure lots of you have advice for this years presidantial candidates, but please remember, while this IS National Grouch Day, it is also National Poetry Day....so before you grouch about them, take the time to make it rhyme.

This is also the beginning on National Shopping Cart Safety Week. So please, Folks, remember to keep right, use proper turning signals, and no texting while shopping.

On a much more serious note, today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Rememberance Day. Many families are touched by this sort of loss, yet it is not something that we discuss often. So today, please know that we are thinking of you and praying for you.
